Today's game had to be played on astroturf due to Grimsby not being able to get a grass pitch. The game was a friendly, but Bury were still looking for a win.
With a few key players out, Big H had to make some changes to the line-up. The team is as follows:
Neil Crossley
Stu, Mark H, Mark T, Craig
Simon, Bob, Ant, Wozza
Nev, Graeme
Subs: John, Tesco, Murray
Bury started the game well with Graeme having a shot deflected wide and Nev missed with a snapshot. Then Grimsby started to pass and move the ball around well with the left winger turning Stu like he was a page in his book, and put a good cross in for the striker to head home a well-taken goal. 1-0.
Bury kicked off with a good few passes and a well-placed cross from Wozza (yeh Wozza!) to the head of Graeme who had his header very well saved from going into the top corner. Then Grimsby had a bit of luck and got away with a hand ball and carried on for their winger to cross the ball. It dipped over Neil's head to hit and bar and rebound for one of their players to have an easy tap-in. 2-0.
John came on for Stu who said he was injured - more like he was gettin battered by his winger and needed a rest. Then Stu came back on for John ten minutes later. The Grimsby team were battling well and winning every ball. Bury managed to get a free-kick, which Ant took and found Craig at the back post to score a Giggs-like goal. 2-1.
Nev was starting to get into the game after a slow start and made a couple of great runs, only to find there was no one in the box as Graeme had to drop back into midfield to help out, as Grimsby were running riot.
Bob was making a great run only for him to get chopped down on the edge of the area. Wozza took the free kick forcing a good save out of the keeper. Bury were starting to get into the game, stringing some nice moves together.
Half time: Grimsby 2-1 Forever Bury
Subs: Tesco came on for Stu, Murray came on for Simon with Murray going up front.
Bury kicked off the second half showing they were not going down without a fight, and piled on lots of pressure and nearly scored with Ant and piled on lots of pressure and nearly scored with Ant and Graeme playing a nice one-two, which Ant missed. Murray decided he wanted to be Christiano Ronaldo with his one-trick pony flicks (don't give up your day job!)
Graeme was winning every header and making some good tackles - See, Gaz, we have got cover. Ant and Graeme combined again with Ant putting a nice cross in for Graeme to just head wide. Ant was playing well with his one-touch passing, who then found Wozza, who put the ball in the box for Nev to slide the ball under the diving keeper. 2.2
Craig then put a nicely-drilled ball in the box for Murray to not connect with it properly. With Bury piling on the pressure, it wouldn't be long before the third goal came. Craig took a throw-in to Murray, who somehow managed to turn his marker and put the ball in the net with his shin. 2-3.
Sub: Stu came on for Bob.
Grimsby got back in the game and fired a shot for Neil to save well and tip onto the bar. Grimsby started to pile on more pressure and hit the bar again after some panic defending the ball got cleared. Then came the move of the game. Ant and Graeme combined again putting together a good number of passes then Graeme just put the ball wide. It would have been some goal if it went in - unlucky lads.
Bury piled on some more pressure with Ant just missing with a nicedly-struck left foot volley. Then came the fourth of the game for Bury, as Murray battled for the ball, it got deflected through the defence for Nev who cooly lobbed the keeper. 2-4.
The game was near the end but Bury still found time to have another chance with Murray missing the target. The game ended and the result was a fair one as Bury had to battle hard for the win.
Final score: Grimsby 2-4 Forever Bury
Want to thank Grimsby for making us work hard for the win and we are looking forward to playing you again.
