After the convincing win over Chester, Bury were full of confidence going into the game. Mark H decided to make some changes to the starting line-up, with the game being played on a Sunday morning. The team was as follows:
Murray
Stu Mark H Mark T Wozza
Bob Gaz Carl Simon
Ant
Graeme
Subs:
John, Kev, Tom, Nev
The game started nicely with both teams passing well. Northwich started better with the midfield passing and moving well and it wasn't long before they had a breakthrough. Their pace up front and on the wings was causing us problems. Mark H played a ball back for Murray to clear but he stumbled on the ball and the striker managed to nick it off him and make it 1-0.
Bury kicked off and tried to pass the ball around but nothing was going right for them. Northwich were in control of the game and soon made it 2-0 when their striker had a shot that bounced under Murray and he followed through to add to his first.
Their pace was causing Bury all sorts of problems and they were passing it around well. They had a couple more shots that went just wide but you could sense that a third was coming, and it did. They played a couple of neat one-twos in the middle of the park and placed a shot in the bottom corner giving Murray no chance. 3-0.
Wozza thought he could sort out the lack of pace in the central defence but it didn't help as Northwich were full of confidence and were carving Bury open with ease. Bury were starting to get back into the game with a couple of neat passes but Northwich saw off the threat and soon added another. They played a nice ball down the wing and the left winger, who was having a good game, put a cross in the box for the midfielder to run on to and head it in. 4-0.
Bury were shocked at the scoreline and couldn't wait for half time to come. But before it did, Bury, who had a rare attack, managed to force a corner which Bob hit onto the top of the crossbar.
Half time: Northwich 4-0 Bury
Mark H had to do something to turn this game around and decided to make a few changes.
The subs were: Nev came on for Big H, Tom came on for Simon.
This meant Nev going up front with Graeme going centre half. The second half began with a new and reformed Bury. The passing and movement was much better and it soon paid off with Gaz and Carl playing some good passing in the middle of the park, which led to Ant playing a nice ball through for Nev who smashed the ball into the roof of the net. 4-1.
Bury were much better and with the defence much more solid nothing was getting past them - especially not past Stu. Wozza was more confident with some nice crisp passing. Bury were in total control of the second half and soon added a second. Ant showed some nice skill to get past his man and played a nice cross for Nev to side foot home his second of the game. 4-2.
Bury sensed that they could get something out of this game and went off on the attack again. With the Northwich defence sitting deep because they were scared stiff of Nev's pace, it was just free flowing attacking football from Bury who went close again when Carl had a 25-yard screamer saved well by the Northwich keeper.
Bury went on the attack again when they managed to force a corner with Tom putting the ball in the box for it to get headed to Nev who just volleyed over from 20 yards out. But it wasn't long before Bury had their third of the game. Kev came on for Bob and swapped wings with Tom. Tom was showing some great pace and skill to beat his marker and chipped the ball over the defence for Nev to run onto a shoot back across goal to get his hat-trick. 4-3.
Simon came back on for Wozza, who was feeling rough from the night before because it was his birthday (nearly as old as John) but Graeme was too good in defence for their strikers who couldn't get past him. Stu decided that he wanted to play get the man not the ball. But the winger wasn't being put off by that as he ran through on goal only for Murray to pull him down. Penalty. Luckily they missed and Bury were still in for a shout at getting something out of this game.
As the game went on Bury pushed more and more to try and get a fourth but unluckily it didn't come as Bury lost their first league game of the season.
Final score: Northwich Victoria 4-3 Forever Bury A
Man of the match: Graeme
Would like to thank Northwich for giving us the best game of the season. Look forward to playing you again.
