From the makers of Mark H's match action comments, comes a more daring, exciting, and probably less gramatically correct section of the website. Yep. It's Tesco's Match Action comments. After each B team game, Mark Nixon will present his captain's thoughts. We would have asked Dave to do it, but he's completely computer illiterate, and he's not really got much that's worth saying anyway. So, here's Tesco's match comments...
Forever Bury A 5-1 Chester Fire Brigade Pub Team Thing (25.02.07)
Firstly a big thank you to Dave who managed to arrange this fixture, and to the lads from the Chester pub team/fire crew for making the short trip to play us. It was a game in which both sides wanted to play football on a very heavy surface which was deteriorating quickly. I thought the addition and welcome return of Jimmy added that bit of extra experience in the middle of the park and the team on a whole. I thought we were unlucky with the own goal. Personally, I thought it was going in so attempted to clear it off the line, but unfortunately the ball found the back of the net.
However, to our credit, we didn't drop our heads and attacked the game. Ben and Allan did an excellent job on the wings and Josh up front was unlucky with some offside calls. The defence was solid and the midfield offered support to the back four and front two and on the whole we were a solid unit. I thought they were a good team, but we had one thing to our advantage: pace, which we used very well. I for one am looking forward to the return fixture in a few weeks and with the return of Paddy and Paul, Dave will have some selection headaches. If we can carry on this form and keep doing what we're doing, I think we could make a serious challenge at WorldNet. Well done to Allan who was voted man of the match.
Forever Bury B 2-1 Fairfield (17.02.07)
First of all I would like to say a big thank you to Fairfield for giving us a run for our money and to Kez who managed to put together a good footballing side. I think there were only two faces including Kez from the last two fixtures. This time Farfield were fitter, stronger, faster and liked to play football.
As for us, it was nice to see Benty back, who offered us the something we have been missing up front - someone who can hold the ball up while everyone pushes up and I personally could see the difference with the return of Benty. We were unlucky to lose Richard so early in the game to illness as I though Allan, Paddy, Paul and Richard would make an excellent midfield, but it gave me a chance to play in my favourite position - right wing.
I thought Neil did very well at right back, and Rossy made an excellent save in the first half but on the whole had quite a good game, which is nice as we are doing something right at the back. Midfield improved a lot and played some good balls for the front two. I thought the whole team played well, we closed Fairfield down quickly and passed the ball around - something we didn't do against Eastside.
We have another game coming up this Saturday from a team of firemen from Cheshire. This will be our hardest game I feel, as being firemen their standard of fitness will be that high. They will be able to run all day long, but if we carry on going what we are doing, I can't see hy we can't win the game and put a run of victories together.
Well done to Baz who got the squad's man of the match in a tight vote which saw several players in the running for the award. See you all next Saturday.
Forever Bury B 2-6 Eastside (04.02.07)
Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to the Rochdale lads for agreeing to play us before they headed off to Walsall to watch Rochdale, and to Danny for rearranging the game with us. It was n important game for me personally, as I was playing against my cousin Danny and against some good friends like John in net, who is a semi-pro keeper.
We know a lot about Eastside and we all knew it would be a hard game, and I think the scoreline flattered them. We were never out of the game and played some nice football at times, but we still have the same problem: the midfield, or lack of it, and some decision making on the ball. Often I found when we had time and space, we just in true Bury style hoofed it up front instead of playing the simple short pass and when we had to play the long ball, we played it short.
I think it will come together when we play some more matches. We were never out of the game and when we did break through John was there to meet the ball. I think we needed a test like Eastside as we can take a lot from it and work on the areas we need to improve on ready for our next game.
Forever Bury B 2-3 Chesham (21.01.07)
Firstly I would like to welcome everyone back after our long break over the Christmas period. Today we hosted our good friends Chesham which wlways proves to be a tough and exciting game of football. This game also brought back some old faces in Stu and Si, and some new players in the form of keeper Wayne and Baz Sav. We all know the pitch took a battering this week, with the weather and wouldn't be suitable for our normal style of play. Winning the toss, I thought it would be best to get the hard bit out of the way first. Uphill, against the wind and in the bog in the bottom corner - I should have brought my wellies down and not my football boots!
First half was always going to be hard, with every long ball or clearance in the air coming straight back at us. A lack of communication at the back, and lack of devensive cover from midfield on a Chesham counter attack. I found myself in a position where I was in two minds. Close down the man, or go with the runner? I chose to close the man down, hoping the central defence would pick up the runner but no one was there. Jay for Chesham played in a nice weighted ball through and Lee ran through to finish. Running back I slid to try to clear the ball off the line but it had already crossed the line.
The second goal was a shocked and really shouldn't have happened. A goal kick into the wind saw the ball come straight back down the middle. With the wind behind them, Chesham shot on goal, the ball landed in front of Wayne who went to pick it up and had a classic 'Murray Moment' and the ball went through his legs and into the net. 0-2 down, we went looking for a goal. Finally we worked out that we would keep the ball better by keeping it on the ground. We managed to apply some pressure to Chesham and won a corner.
A lovely delivery from Alan saw Josh connect with a powerful header, which gave the keeper no chance. Half time came, and Dave made some changed, and with the wind behind us, going downhill and some fresh legs, we battled hard. We knocked the ball around nicely which resulted in Connor hitting the back of the net with nice volley. I thought we pushed Chesham in the second half and should have scored a few more IMO. Unlikely in the dying minutes of the game, Ste went one on one with a Chesham player and lost out in a 50/50 which they finished. On the whole, a hard game and we were unlucky not to get the victory.
Next week we are playing away at Darlo, then have a few home games lined up, so for the first time we have thge chance to play three or four games on the bounce, which should improve us as a team. A big well done to Baz Sav who won Dave's MOTM.
Forever Bury B 4-0 Fairfield Computer Geeks (02.12.06)
Sorry my comments are like me going for the ball - late - but I have been busy with work and drawing up some new fundraising ideas. Again, big thanks to Kez for bringing his side down which proved to be a much better game of football, but once again we proved that we are a good footballing side and a challenge for a anyone.
Kez worked hard on his side after the 10-1 hammerring they got the previous game and full credit to them for coming back out and trying to scrap some respect back. Once again the back four proved difficult to break down. Young Danny did excellently playing left back which he has openly said he didn't feel comfortable with, but credit where it is due, he got his head down, got on with it and had a good game.
The midfield ran their socks off and did exactly what Dave asked, got the ball out wide and used the pace of the wingers and flooded the box and put them under pressure. The service Paddy and Paul gave the front two was superb, supplying some nice though balls and looked for the easy ball. The two wingers ran their hearts out, beating their man and putting some good crosses in. As for Neil in net, next game I am going to bring him a pater to read as I think the first time he touched the ball was three minutes from half-time. The front chased everything they could and to be fair the scoreline in my opinion was flattering to Fairfield.
From a personal point of view, it was nice to push forward and overlap Anton and Jordan to put a few crosses in myself, which I like to do and found myself in the box and having a couple of shots on goal. I admit I should have done better with my chances and either side of the keeper they would have been in. We can take a lot from this game and look forward to Eastside on the 16th which will be our biggest test. They have played togehter for many years and most of them are a part of the Rochdale team. Eastside is a MUST win game for me personally as I know all of them and I have money riding on us to win, but if we play like we can, and we control the game we will beat them. Well done to Ste, who was Dave's man of the match and a speedy recovery to Benty.
Forever Bury B 5-1 Chesham (11.11.06)
Firstly, thanks to John for arranging the pitch for us and to Chesham for coming down and playing us at such short notice, and thanks to everyone in respecting the two minutes silence. As for the match itself, I think the better side won on the day. Chester was our first match together and to be honest, I think you could tell. I said in my last comments that this team can produce some good football and get the results and today we showed that we can. However, today's game was going to be far from easy. Chesham have become a better side and we have not played them for a few weeks.
Having won the toss, I thought it would be best to attack with the wind behind us and try to get as many goals as we could and hopefully Chesham would get tired running into the wind, meaning they wouldn't be able to attack us in the second half as well as they could have done. To be fair, Chesham played some good football and kept the ball on the deck.
Unluckily for Chesham, they came up against a solid back four which kept them out of the game. Not only that, but we have two good keepers now - Rossy who carried on his form from Chester and new keeper John who commands his box well. The front two in both halves caused Chesham problems. The only thing again I feel we are losing the ball in midfield but that is something we can sort out.
Thanks to Kezmoz, we have a game against a side he has arranged, so hopefully we can make it two in a row.
Forever Bury B 1-5 Chester City Fans (21.10.06)
Firstly thanks to all the lads who turned out to play against Chester on Saturday, to Chester themselves for making the short trip to us and finally Wozza for making this match possible. Even though I would class this as our first match of the season and we were on the wrong end of a 5-1 result, I think we can happily take more positives from the game than negatives.
Last season most of the squad was made up fron the current A team squad, which has made way for some new players like Danny, Anton, Paddy, etc. From the squad on Saturday, I would say a good 80% were new players and we never really played together before.
From a personal note I was gutted I had to take myself off so early on, but the flu was winning the battle of the wills. Sitting on the sidelines gave me a chance to watch the game and I can honestly say we were very unlucky. Throughout the game there were signs oif some great partnerships - myself and Paddy linking up well on the right hand side, Ste and Neil in the middle, Benty and Connor up front.
The only area where I thought we were slightly weak was in the middle, but the arrival of Kev Clarke and Paul just gave us that bite we were missing in midfield. And to cap things off, a man of the match performance from Mr Ross in net who was at no fault for any of the goals, and with performances like that, Muzza will have to look over his shoulder.
It was nice to see some of the younger lads get a run out like Danny and Anton who is hungry to score goals, which is great. If we can all try to stay together as a team, try to attend training as much as possible, and get a few extra games under our belts, we will walk games.
Don't get me wrong, Chester were far from a poor side. They passed the ball well but the only time they really made any chances was when they hit us on the break, played the ball over the top and used the pace they had. Something we have to look at, but saying that we had more than our fair share of chances - Kezmoz hitting the post, Benty just putting the ball over on his free kicks and Neil, who should have done better with a sitter in front of goal by a ball supplied by yours truly (editors note: I also had a shot from forty yards that nearly beat the keeper).
As for our goal, it was down to hard work which we showed all game, and a goal we deserved. A corner which was cleared, the mighty Tesco battling to win the ball who laid it off to Benty, who unselfishly played it to debutant Connor to calmly tuck the ball away. Great things are to come from this side and there are several players who are banging on the A team door already. Let's keep our heads held high and keep battling to show the A team how it's done.
